Simple Case (Sample)

Step 1: Identifying a Problem (What is the Problem?)

"My sales reps need new computers!"

Step 2: Identifying Decision Criteria (What are important or relevant factors in solving the problem?)

            • Memory and storage
            • Display quality
            • Battery life
            • Warranty
            • Carrying weight

Step 3: Allocating Weights to the Criteria (Which of these criterion/items have more effect in the decision?)

  • Memory and storage.................................10
  • Battery life..................................................8
  • Carrying weight...........................................6
  • Warranty....................................................4
  • Display quality............................................3
Note: Rate each criterion on a scale of 1-10. And for ease, just use 10 being the most priority and 1 being the least priority.

Step 4: Developing Alternatives (What are the alternatives that can solve the problem?)

alternatives refer to the things you consider that posses at least one of the criteria you created

Possible alternatives:
  • HP ProBook
  • Sony VAIO
  • Lenovo IdeaPad
  • Apple Macbook
  • Toshiba Satellite
  • Sony NW
  • Dell Inspiron
  • HP Pavilion
Step 5: Analyzing Alternatives / Rating and Evaluating Alternatives
  • Sub-step 5.1: Rate from 1-10 each alternatives based on the criteria you have given
Rate from 1-10 each alternatives based on the criteria you have given
  • Sub-step 5.2: Multiply each alternative by the assigned weight and get its total
Example: For HP Probook, we rated its Memory and Storage with 10. So we multiply 10 (which is the value we assessed for Memory and Storage of HP ProBook) by 10 (which is the weight of of the criterion, Memory and Storage).

Step 6: Selecting an Alternative (Which one generated the highest total?)

  •   Dell Inspiron generated the highest total with 249.
Step 7: Implementing the Alternative
  • The computers to be used for the sales reps would be Dell Inspiron
Step 8: Evaluating Decision
  •   If the decision you made was wrong, then you have to repeat the step again.
